In a non-coronavirus-related update, last week the US Transportation Department’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) proposed a number of changes to the standards that regulate motor vehicle safety in the United States seeking to ease certain safety requirements for Automated Driving Systems (“ADS”). The proposed changes are designed to eliminate key regulatory barriers to the safe deployment of autonomous (self-driving) vehicles while maintaining the same level of vehicle occupant protection provided by existing standards.
